a few days ago i bought myself a new pair of headphones for work. now, most deskworkers listen to their music on earbuds, or small headsets, or even on those little desktop speakers… but i am, after all, the person whose living room speakers are a pair of studio reference monitors. i generally don’t like “consumer” gear. and my requirements for listening to music at work are pretty exacting. i need to be able to wear the headphones for extended periods of time without physical or aural ear fatigue. the AKG 240s have a large, deep earcup so they don’t rest right on my ears, and they have a full, accurate sound that doesn’t over-emphasize any part of the spectrum. they also can handle a lot of power. i also have another pair at home – one of two sets of mixing ‘phones, the other being a pair of sony MDR V900s which, while excellent, are far too heavy and tight to the ear for extended use.

so now i can listen to my music – at a reasonably high volume – pretty much all day. and my coworkers can go back to waving their arms like goony birds to get my attention.
